Harmony of Time: Elton John’s Eclectic Watch Collection Hits the Auction Block

Elton John’s Cartier Crash and Leopard Daytona are set to lead the sale of the music legend’s diverse collection, with more than 30 watches being auctioned in eight sales dedicated to Sir Elton. Beginning on February 21, Christie’s will host a series of auctions featuring property from Elton John’s former home in Atlanta. The “Goodbye Peachtree Road” sales will encompass Sir Elton’s extensive collection of photographs, art, fashion, costumes, and watches.

While Sir Elton John’s watch collection represents only 31 of the 921 total lots in the auction, it perfectly reflects his taste for the theatrical, offering a blend of flamboyance and classic appeal. The watches include renowned brands such as Rolex, Audemars Piguet, and Cartier. Among the notable watches is the Rolex ‘Leopard’ Daytona (ref. 116598SACO), released in 2004 with extravagant features like 36 orange sapphires in the bezel, 48 diamonds in the lugs, and a matching leopard-print dial and strap. Another standout piece is the Cartier Paris Crash (1991), part of the limited edition run of 400, showcasing bold and expressive design elements.

The collection also features a custom Cartier Tank Normale from the year 2000, adorned with 20 baguette diamonds in the bezel and 16 blue baguette sapphires on the dial. Additionally, there is a Gold Chopard Imperiale Chronograph, appreciated for its gem setting and retro style. Notably, Elton John’s eclectic watch collection includes Franck Muller, Cartier, Vacheron, Audemars Piguet, and even Lange. Two Franck Muller watches from the 1990s, a Perpetual Calendar Chronograph ref. 7000 and a diamond-set chronograph, reflect the innovative watchmaking of the Master of Complications.

The auction also features a Vacheron Jalousie Les Historiques, a ruby-set Tank from Cartier London, and a surprising addition—an early Lange Saxonia Big Date with a rare diamond-set bezel. These watches showcase classic designs with colorful, gem- or diamond-set accents. Elton John and his husband sold their long-time Atlanta residence last year, concluding his Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour. The public exhibition of Elton John’s collection will run from February 9–21 at Christie’s New York in Rockefeller Center.

Overall, the diverse range of watches in Sir Elton John’s collection not only reflects his personal style but also serves as a glimpse into the unique world he created around himself.
