The Tortue, aptly named for its resemblance to a turtle, holds a distinguished place in Cartier’s history, predating most of its iconic shapes, including the Santos-Dumont. By the 1920s, Cartier had begun incorporating complications like monopushers into the Tortue, marking a period of mechanical innovation. These early chronographs, produced in limited quantities, remain highly sought after by collectors.

In 2024, Cartier revisits this illustrious past with a collection of limited editions, with each chronograph and two-hander limited to 200 numbered pieces in platinum or yellow gold. Additionally, a diamond-set platinum version, restricted to 50 pieces, adds an element of exclusivity to the collection.

The highlight of the collection is the reintroduction of the Tortue monopusher chronograph. Available in yellow gold or platinum, the case measures 43.7mm x 34.8mm and 10.2mm thick, offering a refined yet substantial presence on the wrist. Both variants feature Roman numeral tracks punctuated by large subdials and blued Breguet-style hands, drawing inspiration from the rare 1920s Tortue monopushers.

The monopusher’s sapphire caseback reveals the manufacture caliber 1928MC, a column wheel chronograph adorned with Côtes de Genève decoration. Operating at 4 Hz with a 44-hour power reserve, this hand-wound movement represents a significant refinement from its predecessor, showcasing intricate finishing such as curved Geneva stripes and beveled bridges.

Priced at €53,000 for the platinum version and €46,000 for the yellow gold, the Tortue monopusher chronograph embodies a harmonious blend of aesthetics and technical prowess.

In addition to the chronographs, Cartier introduces platinum and yellow gold time-only models to complement the Tortue collection. Featuring off-white opaline dials and Cartier’s caliber 430 MC movement, these dress watches offer a refined elegance suitable for any occasion.
