Hublot Downsized the MECA-10. Ten Days of Power, Now in a 42mm Case

In 2016, Hublot revealed one of their most unique calibers in the MECA-10, a skeletonized manually-wound movement with a distinct architecture, a ten-day power reserve, and a unique power reserve indicator on the dial. Initially, the MECA-10 was housed in a 45mm case, catering primarily to customers who preferred larger timepieces.

Now, almost a decade later, Hublot has introduced a refined version of the MECA-10 in a 42mm Big Bang case, featuring the HUB1205 manufacture caliber. This is not merely a resized version of the earlier model; the movement has been significantly overhauled for this iteration. Architecturally, the updated caliber has a more streamlined design compared to the original HUB1201.

From the front, the rack and pinion system remains prominently displayed at the 12 o’clock position. This feature visually connects the differential power reserve indicator with the two mainspring barrels in series, responsible for the extended power reserve. The power reserve indicator consists of two oppositely rotating disks, with a red-pointed arrow on the top disk corresponding to the days printed on the rotating black disk beneath. Unlike the earlier 45mm version, which positioned the day disk at the 6 o’clock position with engraved stencil font, the 42mm caliber consolidates both disks at 12 o’clock, resulting in a cleaner and more modern display. This redesign also allows the dial to have a more spacious layout, contributing to the reduced case size.

The caseback of the new MECA-10 showcases further refinements in movement architecture. The bridges have been redesigned with enhanced finishing, including vertical brushing and prominent hand-finished anglage. The silicon escapement adds an amagnetic feature to the movement, ensuring precision and reliability.

The updated MECA-10 is available in three materials: King Gold, Titanium, and, for the first time in the standard product line, “Frosted Carbon,” Hublot’s interpretation of forged carbon. All three models are available now, with the King Gold version priced at $42,700, the Titanium at $23,000, and the Carbon at $27,400.

Key Features and Design Elements

The MECA-10 caliber retains its characteristic skeletonized design, allowing wearers to appreciate the intricate engineering and mechanical movement. The balance wheel is prominently displayed on the dial side, adding a dynamic visual element. The new design of the power reserve indicator enhances readability and modernizes the overall appearance of the watch.

The cases are crafted to complement the movement’s design, with each material option offering unique aesthetics. The King Gold case exudes luxury, the Titanium case provides a sleek and contemporary look, and the Frosted Carbon case offers a lightweight and modern alternative. The straps vary by model, with rubber straps accompanying the King Gold and Titanium versions, while the Frosted Carbon model features a textile strap for a sportier feel.
