In January 2024, Swatch and Blancpain are introducing a new variation in their collaborative line, the Scuba Fifty collection, called the Ocean of Storms. This release follows closely on the heels of their previous collaboration, the MoonSwatch. The Scuba Fifty collection, launched just four months ago, is known for its affordability at a $400 price point, offering historically significant designs from Blancpain’s renowned diver series.

The Ocean of Storms diverges from the vibrant color effects of previous models, opting for a more restrained and conservative appearance. Featuring a black bioceramic case and a brushed, satin-finished black dial with orange accents for depth rating and the seconds hand tip, the watch maintains a measured approach to the collaboration. The dial design follows a modern format with applied markers at 12, 3, 6, and 9, along with the contemporary Blancpain logo at the top. Like other models in the collection, it comes with a striped NATO-style strap.

This sixth addition to the Scuba Fifty collection draws inspiration from the MoonSwatch, particularly the lunar surface’s Oceanus Procellarum, a 2 million square kilometer “sea” on the Moon. The caseback, measuring 42.3mm x 14.4mm x 48mm lug-to-lug, continues the collection’s theme, featuring a nudibranch called the Okenia Luna, printed atop the movement.

Unlike the assumption that it might be a limited edition like the Mission to Moonshine Gold, the Ocean of Storms joins the collection as a regular production addition. It adds a centerpiece to the Scuba Fifty line, connecting both heritage and modern design, appealing to both enthusiasts and novices alike. The collaboration between Swatch and Blancpain continues to make historically significant designs accessible and expands the collection’s appeal within the watch community. The release showcases a blend of affordability, craftsmanship, and thematic storytelling in the world of horology.
