While undoubtedly the famed “Professional” line of Speedmasters is the most popular series of chronographs produced by OMEGA today and historically – contrary to popular opinion, not all Speedmasters are in fact Moonwatches. Notably, the brand has for many years produced a wide assortment of variations on the classic chronograph design, from heritage models to moon-phases, to even digital wearers and bejeweled styles.
One series in particular to skew from the beaten path of the professional line was the 1996-launched Schumacher line, produced in partnership with famed German F1 driver Michael Schumacher. At its launch, the series used the Omega Speedmaster Reduced design as its base, complete with a namesake reduced size 39mm steel case, a more compact dial configuration, and notably an automatic movement that differed from the traditional manual calibers most often used by the brand within the Speedmaster family. In many ways, these watches harken back to the same racing spirit which informed some of the first Speedmasters back in 1957, together offering collectors of the late ’90s a seriously unique piece of OMEGA history.
