The IWC Portugieser (formerly Portuguese) was first introduced in 1939 and is the most popular series in the Schaffhausen manufacturer’s collection. The watch was named after two Portuguese businessmen - Rodrigues and Texiera - who approached IWC in the 1930s and requested a large stainless steel wristwatch that could match the precision of a marine chronometer. IWC responded by creating a timepiece made from a modified pocketwatch measuring a whopping 43mm which was very large for the time. Despite the size, the hallmarks of the Portuguesiser were there; a minimalistic dial with bold Arabic numerals coupled with a thin bezel that made the watch appear even larger. The watch would sell in small quantities for decades, until the mid-1990s when IWC decided to re-design and release it for the modern watch market. Since the Portugieser’s rebirth, the watch has gone on to become the gem in IWC’s crown and is available in a multitude of case material options and complications.
